What's steering your heart?

The month of love is the perfect time to check our hearts, says Micah member Nana Dwomoh

Your heart. The most powerful and essential organ in your body. Not the largest of all our internal organs but certainly one of the most important.

Before you continue, take a moment and place your hand on your heart, close your eyes and begin to slowly inhale from your nose and exhale from your mouth. Be still. Feel your chest rise and fall on each inhale and exhale. Feel your heart beating.

This one organ does so much. It not only allows us to keep moving and helps all other organs to work together in sync, but it’s also where all our emotions, thoughts, feelings, character, intellect and conscience stem from.

Today as you read this post, I want you to take a self-inventory and ask yourself the question: What is steering my heart?

We live in a day and age where God is having to compete for our attention. We have so many distractions that keep our hearts far from Him.

What have you placed and prioritised in your heart? The house, the job, the car, the children or the money God has blessed you with? Not forgetting our friendships and relationship with our spouse or partner, which can also pose a threat to our walk with God when we put them before Him.

Please don’t be mistaken. Such things are indeed blessings. Many good things come from our relationships. But the problem comes when we begin to worship the blessings more than the Blesser. We must ensure that they don’t replace God in our hearts, but rather fuel our desire for more of Him and more of Christ.

If, because of the blessings, we now don't have time to seek Him daily and be in His presence in quiet prayer, then we lack genuine intimacy and relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Ultimately, He wants to have a relationship with us and desires that we also want to have one with him. He wants our hearts.

What does that mean?

It's when we’re willing to take the things we hold close to our hearts and lay them at His feet or put them in His hands, trusting His plan for our lives.

In Matthew 6:21(AMP) it says,

'For where your treasure is, there is your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centres] will be also”. Whatever is in the driving seat of your heart will direct all aspects of your life.'

God desires that we love Him and Him alone with all our heart, all our soul and all our mind (Mark 12:29-30). He wants to have daily fellowship with each and every one of us. He cares about each and every detail in our lives. He wants us to choose Him as the first option, not the last. But know that He has given us the choice. 'Today I have given you the choice between life and death...' (Deuteronomy 30:19 NLT)

He’s not going to force you; He wants you to come to Him willingly.

The more we submit to His will for our lives and gain an understanding of who He is, and not just what He can provide, the more we’ll desire to love, worship and serve Him wholeheartedly.

Now, some of you may be reading this and asking, ‘Why should I trust and love someone I don’t see? Why would I do that? What’s in it for me?’

If you have felt that you're missing something in your life and have tried to fill that emptiness with the things of this world - be it material things, money and/or relationships - yet still feel void, I know and believe that the only thing that can satisfy this need is coming to God through accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.

John 6:35 says,

'I [Jesus] am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” He is everything you are looking for and more. He is the peace that surpasses all understanding, He will give you rest when you are weary and strengthen you when you are weak. All you need to do is believe in your heart.'

'Because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognising His power, authority and majesty as God] and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.'
(Romans 10:9)

So, whether you decide to do this in this very moment or at a time when you have exhausted all of your options and decide that it’s finally the time to come to God, speak this prayer from your heart:

Dear Lord,

Today I come before you asking to repent of my sins. I know I have not done things your way but today I turn back to you. Today I give you my heart and my will and ask for your forgiveness. I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life; I give it to you. From this day forward, help me to live every day for you and in a way that pleases you.

In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen.

For those of you who have already given your heart to Jesus, I encourage you to continue to choose Him daily. Continually look internally and assess what or who is in the driving seat of your heart. May your thoughts, speech, ways of working and living be seen as worship unto our good, good Father.
